What do you feed your dog?
Sometimes this can be a loaded question in the dog community. Ask anyone what they feed their dog, and you will hear a thousand different answers!
It is no secret that I am a bit of a geek when it comes to dog food. It is a topic that is very fascinating and I love to hear what other people have to say about it.
A while back, I put a question out in a few business groups, looking for people to interview for my Petpreneur Talks on my blog. Lots of dog business owners responded, but one of the first were Rab and Katharine Macload of McDug Nutrition.
We got in touch as they were wanting to spread the message about their awesome new brand. Of course I jumped at the chance to talk to them.
McDug Nutrition is the brainchild of Rab Macleod, but behind the scenes it is very much a strong husband and wife team effort. Rab is a true businessman at heart, while his lovely wife Katharine is a whizz at social media. Together, they brought McDug Nutrition to life.
When I asked Rab what possessed him to start producing dog food, he gave me a very analytical answer at first. That was the businessman talking. However, when I asked a bit further, he told me about how their dog Bruce has had a few health scares in the past. You see, Bruce has some allergies that made him ill, which prompted Rab to look into dog nutrition.
Armed with a critical eye, and a keen sense of purpose, Rab decided that there wasn't a brand of dog food on the market that he trusted enough to feed his boy. Like a true dog dad, he had to find a solution.
It's a journey I very much understand and sympathise with, seeing I went through something similar with my girl Aika when she got ill.
When your dog gets sick, it can be frustrating to get the standard 'veterenary perscription' dog food shoved your way, case closed.
Like was the case for me, this simply wasn't good enough for Rab. It was Rab who decided that he had to help, not only Bruce, but other dog pawrents as well.
He was a dog dad on a mission. He read up on dog nutrition and teamed up with industry leading experts. His main goal was knowing exactly what sort of food goes into Bruce's bowl. This is why tracing is such an important topic for Rab. All of the meat that goes into McDug Nutrition is responsibly sourced and only comes from farms and fisheries that he knows and trusts. It is that hands-on commitment from Rab that I find so inspiring!
Rab also doesn't want to stop at dog food. When I asked him what his plans were for the future, he said he wanted to keep it a secret. But he did mention that he planned on expanding the McDug brand into other area's as well, and not just dog food. What those other areas will be, we'll have to wait and see.
I, for one, can't wait to see what he'll come up with!
